Day tour – The Old Battle Field trekking (Nui Dat Hill, Long Phuoc tunnels trek to Long Tan Horse)

Detailed itinerary

    At 8.00am, pick you up at hotel in Ho Chi Minh and depart to Vung Tau. Meeting your local tour guide in Ba Ria. We then travel into Long Phuoc village to visit a former wartime tunnel complex.

    Bus trip to the former Australian Task Force Base (ATF base) at Nui Dat. We then have the opportunity to visit “Kangaroo Pad” a Helicopter dust off strip,  the local Nui Dat school, and former military landmarks such as, SAS hill, “Luscombe Field” air strip, (in 1952 Capt B T Luscombe was killed on air observation post duties in Korea. The airfield constructed to serve the 1 ATF  area in the South Vietnam campaign was named “ Luscombe Field“)…, Luscombe Bowl, (where Little Patties,  Col Joy and other entertainers performed for our troops during the Australian  forces 5 years occupation of the Nui Dat base).

    Picnic lunch will be served.                                                                                                                                        

    We then pause for a briefing in preparation for our trek (approx 2 &1/2 hours) to the Long Tan battle site. We move forward to the rubber plantation and exit the former task force perimeter following in part the patrol route taken by D company 6 RAR (Royal Australian Regiment), passing by small villages and local hamlets and across the dam wall of the Da Ban river, before arriving at the Long Tan Memorial Cross, located under the tranquil surrounds of the rubber plantations canopy. There will be an opportunity to pay our respects and maybe take a moment to reflect on the significance now associated with the battle of Long Tan, and the loss of life on both sides on that fateful day.                     

    We then re join the comfort of our air-conditioned bus and travel via Horseshoe Hill, the elevated site of an extinct volcano. This was a strategic observation out post (FSB, fire support base) established by the Australian forces in 1967.  It was also the anchor point for the now infamous Barrier Mine.

Transfer back to Ho Chi Minh city. The tour ends around 17.00
